Radiation and radioactive substances have many beneficial applications, ranging from nuclear power generation to uses in medicine, industry and agriculture. However, commercial nuclear power plants and activities such as Uranium mining release radiological effluents into the environment. Nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011) have also led to prominent radioactive contamination of the environment as a whole.
